Stop #4
Fermenters
This is where the fun begins. And by fun, we mean waiting. If you peek through the windows/doorway, you can see that our brewery is filled with big ol’, cone bottom, stainless steel tanks. It’s in these thanks that we add yeast to the wurt.
Yeast are our buddies and do much of the work for us. The yeast are tiny living organisms that eat those fermentable sugars we pulled out of the malt...and fart out C02, and poop out alcohol.
Yeast are as unique as you, me, (your cousin, your mechanic, my librarian) and provide a large part of the flavour profile to our beers. Belgian beers, English beers, lager beers...every beer relies on yeast to give it so many of it’s unique characteristics.
Also in these tanks, we add more hops to provide aroma. Those big ol’ juicy IPA’s that smell like Hawaiian Punch, Five Alive, or Minute Maid…? That comes from “Dry-hopping” the beer. Deeeeee-lish!
